The Mythology of "BC Bud"

US Drug Czar John Walters

IMPORTANT: The term "BC Bud" does not refer to any specific strain of marijuana. It's just a general term referring to marijuana that's grown in British Columbia.

BC Bud's "reputation for high potency" is mostly the result of campaigns by politicians in the United States.

There's no question there's quality marijuana being grown in B.C. but to assert that this marijuana is somehow different than the marijuana that's being grown throughout the U.S. is absurd. There's plenty of marijuana grown in the US that is just as good as that grown in BC. But that's NOT what US Drug Czar John Walters wants people to know.

That's why it's very important for him to portray Canadian marijuana as somehow different than US marijuana, as though it's some new drug. "It's not your father's marijuana" is also one of his favorite soundbites. [see: "Not Your Father's Marijuana" Canard Again Exposed -- This Time by DEA]

Walters' characterization of BC Bud as "the crack of marijuana" is one of his main arguments he uses to justify his ongoing vocal campaign against the Canadian government's proposal to "decriminalize" the possession of small amounts of marijuana, saying it's his duty to protect the people of the US by stopping the flow of "poison" coming across the border.

Here's and excerpt from a December 12, 2004 news article "Spotlight spooks pot smugglers" referring to a declining reputation of "BC Bud" in the U.S.:
The rising Canadian dollar has reduced demand for B.C. bud. Asian gangs have set up marijuana factories in the Lower Mainland and hired low-wage workers to tend the crops. The quality is poor enough that B.C. bud is losing its reputation for high potency south of the border. "Mexicans are coming up with better quality and they're selling it for $1,000 a pound. It's all putting pressure on B.C.'s pot industry," the source said.

The US Drug Czar John Walters has seized upon the vagueness of this term and is defining it in outlandish terms designed to confuse people into thinking that it's some new drug that deserves be feared. It's a deliberate propaganda campaign targeting the ill-informed.

John Walters has transformed the term "BC Bud" into a boogie man with his fear-mongering; a myth that is doing us more damage than good for the cause of cannabis law reform in Canada. It's time to expose the mythology of "BC Bud" for the sake of the Canadian cannabis law reform movement, and for the sovereignty of Canadians.

Here's an excerpt from very informative article by Dan Gardner entitled "Straight Dope on Police Scare Tactics":

The U.S.  Department of Justice has also dismissed the much-publicized idea that the majority of Canadian pot is shipped south.  "These estimates cannot be substantiated," concluded a 2001 report. [lots of great information regarding Canadian cannabis exports to the U.S. -- only amounting to 2% of the total]

The Justice Department also dismissed the idea that Canadian pot is uniquely potent and valuable.  "Growers in both Canada and the United States have access to the same strains of cannabis seeds and the same cultivation technologies," the department reported in 2001.  "Therefore, growers in both countries are capable of producing the same quality of high-grade marijuana." The department also concluded, "reports of a reputed exchanged of Canadian marijuana for U.S.  cocaine on a pound-for-pound ratio are false."

It's also important to know that the U.S.  government estimates the total marijuana supply is between 10,000 and 23,800 tonnes, while the RCMP estimates that all marijuana grown in Canada amounts to 800 tonnes.  In other words, we could ship every bud, leaf and stem of Canadian pot south and it would make no difference to the American supply.
